KOVE convenes Loos for Kilburn, the public toilets sub-committee of One Kilburn. We also have a London-wide role as co-founders of the Toilet Manifesto for London Group and as steering group members of the London Loo Alliance, which is coordinated by Age UK London.
KOVE has been campaigning for the restoration of public toilets on Kilburn High Road since 2006. You can find our two documentaries on the subject, For Your Convenience (2006) by clicking HERE and A Necessary Place (2023) by clicking HERE. KOVE has also supported relatives’ successful campaign to restore a toilet in Hampstead Cemetery which will reopen in 2025. Each year we hold a procession on the High Road to celebrate World Toilet Day.
Since 2023 we have concentrated our efforts on two initiatives – a voluntary business initiative on Kilburn High Road and the case for toilets in Kilburn Grange Park. Alongside One Kilburn we continue to argue the case – from need and for dignity, for accessibility and wider economic benefit – for public toilets in Kilburn as a whole. The two local authorities, Camden and Brent have a crucial responsibility alongside businesses, property developers and public transport providers. KOVE believes this commitment should be made clear within the emerging Camden Toilet Strategy and we support campaigns for Brent Council to establish a similarly age-friendly initiative. We have advocated for funding so that toilet providers can share back up for maintenance, cleaning and security.
Available to download below is the map and leaflet ‘Loos for Kilburn’ which shows which businesses are willing to let non-customers use their toilets on request. Also available is the Evaluation of the pilot scheme which made toilets available in Kilburn Grange Park at weekends in the summer of 2024. A film made on the final weekend of the scheme and celebrating its success can be accessed HERE. Although we want to see a permanent solution in the park we have applied to Camden for funding to rerun this temporary scheme in 2025.
